“Islam is a religion of peace” is a refrain the rest of the world hears far too often – and the rest of us have our own opinions on the subject. Peaceful as it may be, the structures of Islam lend themselves to violence more readily than those of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, the Sikh faith and so on.
On April 14th, a 20-year old British woman visiting Israel was stabbed to death on a train in Jerusalem by a Palestinian man. ISIS put a bomb in a market in Baghdad, killing two people, and the Taliban planted a land mine on an Afghan road that killed 11 Afghan civilians.
On April 15th, an act of humanity in the Syrian Civil War had to be derailed, lest some buses of Shia women and children escape from the clutches of the Jihad… 125 people (and one suicide bomber), 68 of whom were children, were killed and 55 were injured.
April 16th: A quiet day.
April 17th, a potential attack but also possibly an accident – a Moroccan driver slammed into five people in Palma. Mallorca. Nobody died and police in this resort city are withholding their judgement.
April 18th, some partisan of Allah shot at a monastery in the Sinai Desert, killing an Egyptian Guard. In Pakistan, a female Ahmadi professor was knifed to death at her home (female, from a ‘heretical sect” and educated, so what’s a Jihadist to do?). In California, one Kori Ali Muhammad rampaged around a Catholic Charity and shot three people to death; he was heard yelling ‘Allahu Akbar’ and later told police he hated white people. French police, however, arrested two Algerian men in Marseille as they prepared firearms and explosives for an attack to be held before the French election.
April 19th was celebrated with a string of 13 attacks with guns and explosives over a swath of southern Thailand; only two dead and three wounded. May God be thanked for the incompetence of the attackers. Meanwhile, in the Cameroon town of Kokofata, a suicide bomber sent four souls on to the afterlife and his own to wherever it is that suicide bombers go. Allahu Akbar.
April 20th saw one Karim Cheurfi, claiming to act on behalf of ISIS, take an AK-47 to police on the Champs – Elysees in Paris, killing one and injuring three others before being killed. ISIS has claimed Cheurfi as one of their own, and they are welcome to him. In the rural Indian village of Gopalpura, Muslims stabbed a Hindu to death.
So, another week: 11 Afghans, Three Americans, One Briton, four in Cameroon, one Egyptian, one Frenchman, two Iraqis, one Pakistani Hindu and one female academic, 165 Syrians, and two Thais in exchange for three Jihadis. Presumably, they numbered two Buddhists, eight Christians, one Hindu, one Jew, and 190 Muslims – most of them women.
It is this last point that raises a dimension to our counter-terror efforts we have perhaps overlooked. The play (from 411 BC) by Aristophanes, ‘Lysistrata’, is about a woman who organizes a ‘Sex Strike’ in order to bring the Peloponnesian War to an end. One wonders how well it sounds in Arabic…
